Thank you to all of the photographers who submitted work for the 2012 PDN Photo Annual. Congratulations to all of the photographers and creatives featured on the following pages. Every year we are amazed at the work we receive and it is an honor for us to reproduce the incredible work in this issue. The judges were faced with a difficult task in selecting this year’s winners.

But now the blues … the real old blues, me and the Reverend was talkin’ that over this mornin’, he knows that too, the real old blues don’t calls for no, no jumpin’, if you go to jumpin’ that ain’t the blues, they can name it the blues but it ain’t the blues, the blues is just by itself — that’s the blues ….

A lot of people want to know what is the blues. I hear a lot of people saying ‘the blues, the blues’ but I’m gonna’ tell you what the blues is. When you ain’t got no money, you got the blues. When you ain’t got no money to pay your house rent, you still got the blues. A lot of people talk about ‘I don’t like no blues’ but when you ain’t got no money and can’t pay your house rent and can’t buy you no food you damned sure got the blues. That’s where it’s at. I tell you. That’s where it’s at. If you ain’t got no money you got the blues. ‘Cause you’re thinking evil. That’s right. Any time you’re thinkin’ evil you’re thinking about the blues. See. If you ain’t, if you, if you’re getting everything you were sent, and don’t need nothing, you don’t have no right to worry about nothing. But when you ain’t got nothing then you got to worry about something, and that’s why the blues come in. And Lord, first thing is that you know ‘I don’t have this, and I don’t have that’ and you look over there at these other people, and they got this and got that, and in your heart you feel like that you ain’t nobody, you got the blues.
